Success indicators: 94% of mothers maintained good nutrition (WHO). 85% of children maintained weight and MUAC above malnutrition levels. 100% of children with disabilities adequately carried out the prescribed activities.
These results demonstrate a significant improvement in the nutritional and health conditions of vulnerable women and children in Juba
Improving Nutrition in Juba – Phase 3
2022 - 2023
ACHIEVED RESULTS: The project achieved significant improvements in maternal and child nutrition and health.
- Staff training: 118 operators trained on nutrition, hygiene and data collection.
- Visits and evaluations: Hygiene improvements in 5 dispensaries and 8 orphanages.
- Distribution of milk and supplements: Provided daily to 1,108 mothers and 2,029 pregnant women.
- Awareness raising: 1,917 people participating in events, 42,000 direct beneficiaries from radio talk shows.
- Nutritional support: 1,996 women and 550 children monitored, with distribution of micronutrients.
- Food distribution: 1,097 children, 1,108 mothers and 1,300 orphans received milk and peanut butter.
- Support for families: 300 families received monthly food kits.
These results improve local health capacities and nutritional awareness.
CURE: Construction of an effective network of health
and rehabilitation services in the city of Juba
2019 - 2023
ACHIEVED RESULTS: 115 hours of training provided to facility managers and health coordinators operating within the 5 project dispensaries and 150 hours of monitoring and coordination. The PHCC (Primary Health Care Center) has been completely renovated and equipped. Renovation of the PHCC Usratuna. Renovated and equipped 4 dispensaries in the Municipality of Juba: Mangateen, Way Station, Kimu, Sacred Heart. Continuous supply of medicines and basic materials for the 5 dispensaries. More than 1700 healthcare workers trained. More than 5,000 people raised awareness of disease and disability prevention. 3743 cases of syphilis treated. 250 hours of theoretical training carried out for the physiotherapists of the Usratuna Centre. 980 hours of on-the-job training for Usratuna physiotherapists. First training course for Occupational Therapist Assistants carried out in South Sudan. First and only Occupational Therapy department in the country open and functioning. 491 children referred to Ugandan hospitals for life-saving operations and 1575 children followed for follow-up during the entire duration of the project.
NSA: Nodding Syndrome Alliance

ACHIEVED RESULTS: Together with Amref Italia (lead partner), in an integrated perspective, I took charge of the needs of the communities affected by Nodding Syndrome (leaning syndrome) and epilepsy in the region of East Equatoria State and Central Equatoria State, specifically in the city of Maridi and satellite villages of the same, city of Lui and Mundri and neighboring villages, Juba metropolitan area. 14 local professionals were trained on epilepsy issues, in particular on Nodding syndrome; 35,000 people who make up the catchment area that uses the services for the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy implemented by the project. Established a network for the identification, treatment and inclusion of people affected by Nodding syndrome and epilepsy; improved treatment and quality of life for people with Nodding syndrome.

ACHIEVED RESULTS: Improved the use of basic health services, especially for the most vulnerable groups, for refugee camps and IDPs and host communities in the urban area of Juba. 55,000 people who had direct access to at least 1 of the 5 Dispensaries supported by OVCI in Jubek State or received help through the activity of the mobile clinic.
Improving Nutrition in Juba – Phase 2
2019 - 2021
ACHIEVED RESULTS: Guaranteed food supplementation for vulnerable sections of the population of Juba, including pregnant/breastfeeding women and children in a state of medium-severe malnutrition. A daily meal is also guaranteed for the families of children with disabilities enrolled in local schools and for families in need. Milk distributed in 11 community distribution points, 9 dispensaries, 11 local schools and 9 orphanages, distributing 500 ml of milk per day to each child; distributed vitaminized milk to children in a state of moderate malnutrition (30 children between 0-6 months and 16 between 6-9 months) – MAMILAC 1 and MAMILAC 2 programme; distributed 24,000 micronutrients and vitamins in local Dispensaries to pregnant women to prevent fetal disability; distributed daily meals (peanut butter) to children in 1 school, 7 orphanages and 4 community distribution points, involving 1,365 children; distributed 400 food kits to families of children with disabilities who are in a state of malnutrition, reaching 150 beneficiaries; distributed 355 food kits every month to children in the weaning phase (over 6 months of age). Improvement of the nutritional conditions of 3,000 pregnant women and 2,500 children per month.

ACHIEVED RESULTS: In terms of curative health, a three-year development plan has been structured for each of the 4 reference dispensaries; the prefabricated structures of the Usratuna Dispensary (Primary Health Care Centre) were restructured in masonry; equipped the 4 project Dispensaries with medical and sanitary instruments. A continuous supply of medicines and basic materials was also ensured. The relationships of the dispensaries with the reference network have been reorganised. At the training level, 50 hours of intensive classroom training were provided for the managers of the 4 Dispensaries, on issues relating to the management of the facilities and 3 training workshops were held for the personnel of the dispensaries on health issues and 2 training workshops for healthcare personnel of Juba Health Centers on early diagnosis and referral of epilepsy cases. Hospitality and socio-medical assistance were provided to 1,500 children with epilepsy at the Usratuna Center, with family and community awareness. During the lockdown, an experimental activity of home visits was also launched. There were 3 awareness-raising meetings on epilepsy in the Community, through community health workers. Lastly, the management of a unit for pre- and post-natal care and prevention was launched in Usratuna and Way Station and a new unit was opened in the Mangateen dispensary. In terms of preventive health, a well was built for the community residing near the Mangateen Dispensary and two training sessions were held on its maintenance and use. 7 community awareness events were organized on food hygiene and safety issues and on the prevention of the most common diseases, 500 mosquito nets were distributed, the selection of pregnant and breastfeeding women and children in need of nutritional support began, in collaboration with Health Centers and IDP Camps. Lastly, nutritional support was ensured for children and pregnant women at risk of malnutrition in 4 dispensaries in the city of Juba, and cases of acute malnutrition were referred to the Pediatric Hospital.

ACHIEVED RESULTS: A new Orthopedic Workshop was built and equipped following the quality standards prescribed by the International Red Cross, suitable for the construction and repair of aids and the positioning of plaster casts. A freely viewable aids catalog has been produced. Training of orthopedic technicians in the production, maintenance and repair of aids, 4 of which work at the Usrtatuna Rehabilitation Center. Several Social-Healthcare and Rehabilitation Services included in the patient reference network, also involving other states of South Sudan. More than 2,000 people with disabilities evaluated by project physiotherapists for treatments and possible prescription of aids, with the aim of increasing their autonomy. 30% increase in the variety of aids produced at the Orthopedic Workshop. 300 children with disabilities included in school also through special aids and 15 people with disabilities included in a working activity.
Promotion of Human Rights of People with Disabilities in Juba County through the enhancement of socio sanitary condition

ACHIEVED RESULTS: Promoted Inclusive Education and the right to study of children with disabilities through teacher training. A large-scale awareness campaign on the rights of people with disabilities was carried out through socio-rehabilitation activities with patients and their caregivers, local radio and TV, awareness-raising moments in local communities and cultural events in public schools in Juba. Basic survey carried out on "Perception of human rights violations among people with disabilities in Juba". Formation of inclusive policies, rights of people with disabilities to staff of Local Authorities. Started counseling service for families where there are people with disabilities. Healthcare personnel training on the identification, management and reporting of cases of disability, with particular attention to early investigation.
JUBA - OVCI Community Based Rehabilitation program
2016 - 2018
ACHIEVED RESULTS: program already active in the districts of Kator and Munuki, extended to the district of Juba Town and the displaced persons (IDP) of Mahad and Don Bosco (Gumbo), where people who fled the conflict, which began in 2013, live. Home visits of families where there are children with disabilities continue, with the aim of providing basic rehabilitation and giving indications to the family on the correct practices to be adopted towards their child in everyday life. Continuous training carried out for the CBR team. School Disability Awareness Clubs (SDAC - school groups for raising awareness of disability) have been activated in schools, with which inter-school debates have been held on the issues of disability, education, human rights and inclusion. Structural adjustment in the schools followed by the program, to favor a better inclusion of children with disabilities. Awareness raising activities for teachers, parents, principals and school committees on the issues of inclusion and integration of children with disabilities. Three Parent Groups - active in the districts of Juba Town, Kator and Munuki - have been set up to carry out income-generating activities such as the preparation of homemade pasta, biscuit production, catering service and liquid soap. Intensified collaboration with the Minister of Social Services, Education, Sport and Technology.
