In 1993 Alda Pellegri, Celestina Tremolada and Dr. Elisabetta Gaiatto, all involved in the OVCI projects, met in Geneva Dr Enrico Pupulin, a child neuropsychiatrist from Castelfranco Veneto, at that time responsible for the WHO Rehabilitation Sector. Dr. Pupulin had already carried out in Mongolia, through the AIFO NGO of which he was an active member, an experience of CBR assisted by voluntary therapists of the Territorial Service of Child Neuropsychiatry of Castelfranco Veneto.

Dr. Pupulin suggests to Our Family Association to experiment with the CBR model because:

"The theme of «hiding» is part of the common spirituality: it should not frighten the assumption of a project that could require a great commitment without giving any notoriety, since the owner of the project is not an institution but the basic community involved..."

This message appears very close to the ideals of the Organism so that the CBR has in fact become a model made by OVCI Our Family in foreign countries.

Basic elements of the project:

  • Community Based Rehabilitation is based on an analysis of the needs to which it responds by exploiting all the local resources identified
  • the Reference Centre trains the volunteers found in the territory and supports their work that is carried out in the suburbs
  • one of the most significant commitments is to identify institutions or persons responsible at the political - administrative level to give continuity to voluntary activity
  • the principles of the CBR are important also because they allow to adapt the style of the rehabilitation intervention to the sobriety and control of the consumption of resources, today indispensable also for the more civilized countries.
